Thank you, LittleDove, for all you bring to this site. This one gave me great comfort tonight and peace. I had to place my mother in a nursing home today for her own good and mine. I will visit her there often and look after her, but it was a hard thing to do. This video and song comforted me. Lynda

The Cherokee lyrics are completely different from the English, but just as meaningful. We still call it “Amazing Grace” when speaking English.
Songs are so helpful to learn a language. I teach this and two others to my first-year Cherokee students as “The Trail of Tears Greatest Hits!” **
This was, and is, our funeral song. By the end of the Removal, with funerals every day, it was the song that everybody knew by heart. It became our national anthem.
So while most nations have anthems telling you how wonderful they are or how courageous, or how beautiful their land is, our anthem is our funeral song, to remind us of all of those who we lost, and with whom we will be re-united someday.
I live and work on the Trail of Tears. It's never far from our thoughts.
nvwatohiyada, healing and peace to you all.
** the other two are “One Drop of Blood” and “Guide Us, Great Jehovah.”
