| To "Walk in Beauty" means-"Beauty before me, beauty behind me, beauty beside me, beauty below me, beauty above me - I walk in beauty." Walking in Beauty is walking in-Joy, Bliss and Safety. It permeates our physical, emotional, mental and spiritual bodies. To walk in beauty is to celebrate the Sacred Dance of Life, To join the Circle with an open mind and an open heart, and to move at our own pace with clarity, kindness, and a sense of calm. To walk in beauty, is to understand and practice the way of right relationship and to appreciate all of the beauty that exists both within and all around us. In Native Traditions, the South direction of the Medicine Wheel contains four practices. These are non-attachment, non-suffering, non-judgment and beauty. The Lakota say that the South Wind,Okaga creates beauty. Pondering this for a moment, you can understand that if we practice non-attachment, non-suffering and non-judgment, we will arrive at a space where we can walk in beauty. "Walking in Beauty" is more than a feeling or emotion. It is a state of being that can best be described as grace. In this state of grace called beauty, we accept that everything is. What is,is.- If we examine our lives honestly, we realize that the things we attach ourselves to in life often lead to a great deal of unhappiness. There are many such attachments-to people, careers, money, romantic love, possessions, religious practices, keeping up with the neighbors-the list is endless. All of our attachments, at some point, will lead us to an awareness, in which we either refuse to accept or we are unable to accept what is. Non-acceptance eventually leads to pain and suffering, at which time we fall from grace forgetting that we are surrounded by beauty. By practicing non-attachment, we can eliminate the source of the majority of our suffering. In this life, pain is inevitable but suffering is optional. It is our choice. We can choose our own suffering. The key to practicing non-suffering is to walk softly and stay in the moment, stay in our "Beauty." The south is the color yellow, which represents the warmth of the sun It also represents air, the breath of life in the body. Air reminds us that life is not about us alone, but it is a process of give and take. It is also about living life and we live by letting go, not by holding on. While the majority of our suffering comes from regret, remorse and guilt about the past or fear of possible future pain, and fear of the unknown. Judgment also plays a part. It is astonishing how much time and energy we spend on judging. Not just judging others, but judging what is good and bad about our own lives, and the world around us. Our judgments are all based on comparisons made with past pain or pleasure. Our suffering and judgments not only keep us from the grace of beauty, but they keep us locked in time. When we can let go of past pain and judgments we can walk in Grace as we experience our own divinity. One of the greatest joys of walking in beauty is the consistent experience of our own divinity. To Walk in Beauty is to walk gently with a twinkle in the eye, loving thoughts in the mind and a smile in the heart. |
